Joe Schwarcz isn’t kind to so-called experts who get their science all wrong, thereby making an already scientifically illiterate public even more confused about their food.
“Is it possible to squeeze more nonsense into fewer words?” asked Schwarcz, head of McGill University’s Office for Science and Society. In this case, it was a quote from a best-selling food guide that tried to explain how an enzyme isn’t actually a molecule, it’s a property of atoms.
Since the early 1980’s, Schwarcz has also been a myth debunker for CJAD radio in Montreal, from which his Sunday afternoon programs can be heard on www.cjad.com, and he says there’s still an armful of nonsense to deal with on every show.
To help, Schwarcz has perfected a quick tongue, and some maxims of his own. There’s one of those sayings in particular, though, that he says would mean success if every child could be taught to understand it.
“Taking no risks,” Schwarcz says, “is the biggest risk of all.”
